M4:Reinforcement Activity

This week focused on storytelling. A subject was picked to take a listening test and record the answers to the questions. My friend was my German engineering husband. Herbert is 57 and likes to always be right and on target.

1. The first question asked to write 1-8. He wrote 1-8, then wrote each number on the side of the paper. He said both ways could be right.

2. The second question asked what would you light first in a cold, dark room. He picked the candle forgetting about the match that you need to light the candle with.

3. The driver of the bus is you question. The question has lots of facts and then asks what color is the driver's eyes? He got that one right after complaining for a bit.

4. He totally missed the survivor on the plane part of question 4. He said where ever they wanted to be buried.

5. He totally got the Moses and the ark question right. His mom is Catholic and they were in church when it was open. He said it was Noah.

6. He responded correctly on the question can you marry your his sister's widow. He wrote you would be dead.

7. Do they have a fourth of July in England? Herbert's response was of course they do.

8. He responded to the question can a man living in Australia be buried in NZ correctly as well. No, he is alive he responded.

9. He started complaining when I said question 9, because he said, you said write 1-8, this is 9. He got this one wrong. He said he has 3 apples. so, he wanted all 3 apples and not just to take 2.

Storytelling impacts the mind. The subject is listening for preconceived elements that could impact the question at the end.

I could definitely use this listening test in my class. Maufacturing is all about the process. At Mercedes-Benz you have to do each step in the process. If you don't then the car could be unsafe. Part of training is for you to read the steps to the trainer as the trainer performs the process. We can easily recreate that in class. I always like the reading test that has all the outrageous sounds and activitoes that you have to complete if you don't follow the directions to read the instructions in their entirety. The last step is always disregard all steps and write your name on the page.

I would like to give this particular listening quiz to my students. I would like to see how age and where a person originates determines how the student thinks about the question. Now, it is a given that competitive people will want to get these right. I see in Herbert the need to be right and how it effected his thinking.

I would give the students directions in a list and repeat 3 times. Then let the students try to recreate the steps in the shop usung the equipment. Test their listening that way.
